New Players Guide

Introduction:
First and foremost, welcome to Runescape! In this guide we will attempt to answer many questions that are asked by new players. As with all our guides, this information is gathered from third-party sources. The absoulute most informative guide you can find will be located on the Runescape main page, because it was written by the most informed people - the creators of the game. This guide however, is more down to earth. In this guide we will assmue that you 1) have already created a character and know how to log in, 2) Have completed the tutoral island tutoral and, 3) are below level 20. If you fit this criteria, read on!

Your first steps:
The world of Runescape is huge, and it is very easy to become lost right off the bat. As such we will provide a general boundry for this guide. Note that these are NOT required in the game, but simply suggested for the purpose of this guide.

In this area you will find everything you need to learn the basics of playing Runescape. As you expand your learning to encompass things such as skills, exploration, and quests, you will need to move outside of the boudry line provided above, but that comes later in the guide. For now, we will look at the tutors who can be found inside these boundries, henceforth referred to as "Lumbridge".

Your first Steps:
For this section you will need to Log In. After you have done this click the red button you see. This will leave you standing at lumbridge castle. You should be at the red spot on the map above, or near it. If you are NOT, look on the right hand side of your screen for the icon representing your spellbook. It should look something like this:

Next find the first icon in the book (top left corner - an "H" surrounded by blue circles). Click this and watch your character perform the ritual for a home teleport. Use this button at any time during your Runescape life if you become disoriented and unable to locate yourself and you will return to Lumbridge. Your experiance at tutoral island should have left you with some materials like bread, a wooden shield, shrimp, bronze weapons, and a bow with some arrows. Our first objective will be to help you locate a bank. Move to the teal dot and go up the stairs twice. Now look for the bank icon on your minimap - its one of only two. Move up to the bank booth and open your bank (right click and choose "bank" to use it quickly). Take out all your weapons and head back down to the red dot. You are now back in the courtyard of Lumbridge Castle. This is the area you will end up in if you ever die. Now make your way to the general store (located just north of the blue dot. The first thing you should do is sell your weapons and shield. This will give you a tiny amount of spending money, so you wont be stuck in a hole. Next move to the blue dot and speak to the Melee Trainer. He will explain some details and give you a training shield and sword which look like this:

Next speak to the ranged trainer to get the bow and arrows:

These are equal to the things you sold so you dont need to worry about quality. If you die and loose them simply return to the appropriate trainer and reclaim them.

A Little Action:
Now we'll move to the first real chance for you to play the game. This section allows you a little bit more freedom than the previous section because you can choose which area you try first. On your minimap you will see a white icon with a question mark on it (henceforth - "(?)"). This represents a skill tutor. In lumbridge you will find prayer, woodcutting, banking, smithing, and combat tutors. You should move around talking to all these tutors untill you learn the basics of these skills. Feel free to try them out as well, you can move along this guide at your own pace so stop to practice at amy time you wish.

Exploring:
Now we'll deal with exploration. In the lumbridge general store (remember - blue dot) you can buy a map for a few gp. We suggest you get one just in case you get lost. Remember, if you ever get lost use the home teleport option to return to the Lumbridge Castle Courtyard.

As a free player, which you most likely are, you can access the cities of Lumbridge, Al Kharid, Varrock, Falidor, and Port Sarim. Each city is unique in appearance, and available resources. Most will have the basic things like water sources, banks, and general stores. Each city will also have some special things which cannot be found in many, if any other cities. Al Kharid, for example, contains one of only 3 tanners in Runescape. The other two are located in member areas. As you travel you will learn where to find certain things which you may need.

The closing statement:
In closing, we will offer a few tips which you can use while enjoying the game.
  • If you are training a particular skill, it may be better to get all your required materials in one city and then move to the next spot instead of making multiple trips back and forth.
  • as you grow in the game, you will learn all you need to know about it. Dont try and take in too much information at once or you will become bored and lose interest.
  • Remember - its a game, not a job. Dont get upset if you die, or mess up, simply try again.
  • Runescape can be fun, once you get the hang of it, but never forget real life. Try and remember to get out and be social, too.

Thats all for our guide, happy scaping!

Random Tip:
Moderators can be spotted by their in-game crowns. Player moderators have silver crowns, while Official JaGex moderators have gold crowns.
Scam Alert!
Be carefull of players asking you to follow them. While luring into the wilderness is no longer possible, you can still be lured to some dangerous areas in the game! Keep an eye out for players attempting to lead you into dungeons, as you will take damage and die if you dont have a light source, thus allowing them to take your items.
